How to Choose a Dentist in Los Angeles

Los Angeles has thousands of dental offices, so finding the right one is less about luck and more about knowing what to check. These are the practical steps we suggest before you book.

1. Start with location and hours

Traffic in LA is real. An office 4 miles away can take 35 minutes at rush hour. Pick a practice close to home or work, and ask about early-morning, evening or Saturday appointments if your schedule is tight.

2. Confirm insurance before the first visit

Call the office with your plan name and member ID and ask whether they are in-network for your specific plan, not just your insurance company. Many offices accept a carrier’s PPO but not its HMO/DHMO plans.

3. Match the provider to the need

  • General dentist – cleanings, fillings, crowns, routine care.
  • Pediatric dentist – children and teens, including kids with special needs.
  • Orthodontist – braces and clear aligners.
  • Endodontist – root canals.
  • Periodontist – gum disease and some implant work.
  • Oral surgeon – extractions, wisdom teeth, implants.
  • Prosthodontist – complex crowns, bridges and dentures.

4. Verify the license

California dentists are licensed by the Dental Board of California. You can look up a license on the state’s official license search. Every profile on this site also shows the provider’s NPI number, which you can check in the federal NPI registry.

5. Ask a few questions on the phone

  • What does a new-patient visit include and roughly what does it cost without insurance?
  • Do you offer payment plans?
  • How are emergencies handled after hours?
  • Which languages are spoken in the office?

6. Trust your first visit

A good office explains findings clearly, shows you X-rays, gives a written treatment plan with prices, and does not pressure you to decide the same day. For large treatment plans, a second opinion is normal and reasonable.
