Get help with a dental emergency
What counts as a dental emergency?
Severe tooth pain, a tooth knocked out or loosened by an injury, a cracked tooth with sharp pain, swelling in the gums or face, or bleeding that will not stop are all reasons to get seen quickly. A lost filling or a small chip is usually urgent but can often wait a day or two.
First steps while you reach a dentist in Los Angeles
- Knocked-out tooth: hold it by the crown, rinse briefly, keep it in milk or back in the socket, and get to a dentist within the hour if you can.
- Pain: rinse with warm salt water, floss gently, use a cold compress outside the cheek. Do not put aspirin on the gum.
- Broken tooth: save the pieces and cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum.
- Swelling with fever, or swelling that spreads toward the eye or neck, needs same-day care or an ER visit.
Many offices in Los Angeles keep a few same-day slots, so call early in the day. Use the form above and tell us what is happening. We pass your request to local offices that can help.

Frequently asked questions
Can I go to the ER for a toothache?
Emergency rooms can treat infections, swelling and pain, but most can't repair teeth. For breathing problems, major swelling or trauma, go to the ER. Otherwise, a dentist is usually the faster fix.
How fast do I need to see a dentist for a knocked-out tooth?
As soon as possible. The best chance of saving an adult tooth is getting it back in place within about an hour.
Do emergency visits cost more?
Some offices charge an extra fee for after-hours visits. Ask about the exam fee and X-rays when you call. Insurance often covers an emergency exam.
Which dentists below offer same-day appointments?
Practices that confirmed same-day or emergency availability in their profile are marked and listed first. Other offices may still have openings, so it is worth calling.
