Wisdom teeth usually appear between ages 17 and 25. Some people keep them without problems; others need them removed.
When removal is recommended
- Teeth are impacted (stuck under the gum or bone)
- Repeated infection or swelling around a partly erupted tooth
- Decay or damage to neighboring teeth
- Cysts or not enough room to clean them
Before surgery
- Ask what type of anesthesia will be used and whether you need a driver.
- Follow fasting instructions if you will be sedated.
- Stock soft foods: yogurt, smoothies (no straw), soup, mashed potatoes.
After surgery
- Bite on gauze as instructed and rest with your head elevated.
- Use cold packs for the first day.
- Avoid straws, smoking and spitting for several days to protect the blood clot and reduce the risk of dry socket.
- Call the office if pain gets worse after day 3, or if you have fever or heavy bleeding.
